Frank Field's admiration for Thatcher

I've just spotted an extensive interview with Birkenhead MP Frank Field from the Sunday Times.

The Labour rebel speaks of his admiration for Margaret Thatcher, who "knew how to capture the government machine and run it." Asked if he still admires her; "Oh yes."

He also describes why he thinks Gordon Brown should have been sacked years ago.

As the article makes clear Mr Field's popularity extends well beyond his Birkenhead constituency:

Rober Chesshyre writes: His ears would have burned had he heard the praise heaped on him when I told him when I told people I was writing this piece. Tories said he should join them, a Labour voter wanted his as PM; neutrals spoke of his integrity.

The piece is well worth a read, and can be found here.

Your recent feature on the Liverpool Direct contracts was interesting. Their response was a little in error though. On top of the basic charge, ther is an additional charge of about £200.00 for accessing at home. this is not within the ststed charge. part of this is £90.00 for a number generating fey fob to give you a random access code number. this must be replaced at another £90.00 every two years. then of course there is the compulsory maintenmance charge for each computer at £2,000 per year. I think it is called a license to print money except that you are also forced o buy your printer from Liverpool Direct and all perfectly functioning council owned printers were electronically locked out by LDL. You cannot buy any software or IT equipment from the high street even though it is at least a third or half the cost.

If they have nothing to hide and are so proud of this service, why do they continue to keep the allegedly damning audit reports secret?

Sorry Mr Frank Field but nothing you do or have to say is of any interest to me.

The other interesting thing about Liverpool Direct, which of course featured on the front page of the Daily Post on Saturday, is the £34 million management fee they currently claim from the city council.
I am sure Rafa Benitez gets nowhere near the same management fee for running a first class team.
Never mind some third rate outfit who then add insult to injury by charging three times as much as PC World for computers.
I wouldn't mind but the computers do not even allow staff to access certain web sites, including the enormously informative liverpool subculture blog, for example.
So hardly a bargain.
When is anyone ever going to get to the bottom of this absolute rip-off by Liverpoool Direct of the people of Liverpool?
And who is going to be the first to try and hush it up?
