paula_keaveney210.jpgLiberal Democrat Paula Keaveney (pictured) has been selected to fight equalities minister Maria Eagle for her seat in the next General Election.

The pair will be squaring up for the newly created Garston and Halewood constituency (Ms Eagle is currently the MP for Liverpool Garston.

It will be the third time the Edge Hill University lecturer attempts to prize the seat from Ms Eagle, who has been Garston MP since 1997.

The Labour minister currently has a majority of 7,193, and Cllr Keaveney, a member of Liverpool Council's ruling executive board, would need a swing of 10% to win the seat.

But the new seat is a bit of an unknown, it is made up of five wards in Garston and three in the Halewood part of Knowsley.

The Lib Dems currently have nine of the 15 Councillors in Garston and five of the eight in Halewood (the ninth seat is currently vacant due to resignation), and the Lib Dems control Halewood Town Council.

Although it is worth saying that the current South Knowsley constituency which includes Halewood is held by Eddie O'Hara who has a massive majority of 17,688. Mr O'Hara is standing down at the next election.

If the LibDems seriously believed any of these Liverpool seats were winnable, they wouldn't be putting up second-rank councillors like Keaveney or Twigger, and utter rankers like Eldridge. If a parliamentary seat were in reach, you can bet the Storeyteller would be clambering over the dead bodies, closely followed by Herr Boot-Estate.

have to agree with ronnie

paula k has alresay failed twice in this seat. David- you have painted a very rosy picture of this for Paula, bascially the only change is garston taking in rock solid labour Halewood. the fact the lib dems do well locally in halewood is an irrelvance. you only have to look at their pathetic record in GE's in Liverpool despite their 10 yr dominace of LCC
