Three amigos: Liverpool education leader Keith Turner, council leader Warren Bradley, and former education leader Paul Clein.

Liverpool's education leader Cllr Keith Turner is in the firing line today after "snubbing" the city's school governors.

You can read the full piece HERE, which has been written by my colleague Ben Turner.

The thing that strikes me about this story is just how unusual it is for school governors to speak out about any given subject let alone stick the boot into the education leader.

That a school governor should be calling for him to resign and his predecessor Paul Clein brought back is a serious matter.

Cllr Turner has attended just one of five possible meetings with governors since he took on the role as executive member for education, skills and employment in May last year.

Cllr Turner has insisted he was "not trying to avoid" the governors and blamed clashes in his hectic work diary for his absence.

I think it highly unlikely that council leader Warren Bradley will sack Cllr Turner, or for the that matter that he will resign.

But he should probably take seriously this shot across his bowels.

The improvement in education is one of the Liberal Democrats' success stories after their decade or so in power and it would be a great shame for the party if the wheels were to start falling off now with only months to go to the next election.

Anyone who has seen Cllr Turner's inept performances in the Council chamber or at a Select Committee will know that this was only a matter of time coming. Never has anyone been so unprepared. If officers were not there telling him what to do, he wouldn't stand a chance.

Along with a friend I attended a Croxteth school debate. Turner failed to even convince his own party of the merits of the decision, never mind others. He was so out of his depth. It was actually so embarrassing we felt sorry for him.

Perhaps these Governors just want someone who knows what they are doing? Not much to ask considering we pay these senior councillors to.
