Jane Kennedy's decision to stand down at the General Election

About a month ago Wavertree MP Jane Kennedy bought a Belgian Shepherd dog.
Whether she knew so at the time it was a decision that ultimately signified that she had decided to call time on her 17-year parliamentary career.
When I met her to interview her about her decision to stand down she told me she had often wanted to have a dog but the demands of spending most of the past 10 years in Government meant that it would not have been fair on the animal.
So now Ms Kennedy is starting to enjoy life with a puppy around, it has already visited parliament and destroyed one of her favourite hand bags, and casting her eye to what she will do after the next General Election.
In January when I wrote an analysis of the competition for the Wavertree seat I said Ms Kennedy us regarded as hard working (but does so without shouting about it).
And I stick by the view. When we met she apologised that she needed to make a quick call to the chief executive of a company that was facing ruin.
It transpired that Ms Kennedy had been helping lobby the Government for the firm which was facing a backbreaking tax bill.
During the call the chief executive of this large company thanked her for her help, an agreement had been reached and the company was safe.
I have no doubt that had I not been there I would never had known about this episode. There would not have been a press release bragging about it, no phone call to say 'by the way you might want to write about this'.
Ms Kennedy, like many MPs, simply gets on with helping companies and individuals, without a song and a dance.
But despite being able to help in instances like this I sensed that she was fed up.
She denied being fed up, instead saying she was tired. Tired of not seeing her family, tired of battling with the Liberal Democrats who she said she had no respect for in Liverpool.
