Jane Kennedy's Liberal Democrat rival Liberal Democrat Colin Eldridge responds

Liberal Democrat Colin Eldridge has tried his best to sound magnamous after Jane Kennedy announced she will be standing down from her Wavertree seat at the General Election.

He hopes to win the Wavertree seat at the next election.

Today he said: "She served the people of the constituency to the best of her ability.

"As a parliamentarian, she has consistently raised her concerns for issues she sees as important.

"Clearly, one of the major factors on her decision is the fact that it will be an extremely close election."

"We may have been divided politically, but in private life I wish her well for the future".

The resignation of Ms Kennedy will probably be seen by his campaign as a good thing as she had better name recognition in Wavertree as the incumbent.

But it does also mean that the Lib Dems are now going to have to re-think their campaign.

They won't have to re-think at all. From what I can tell of their election material, even if the Labour candidate was Barack Obama they would still be smearing him in every Focus leaflet. Why his partner shouldn't be First Lady, why the kids shouldn't be educated at schools in washington, why his choice of puppy was offensive to animal lovers. All the ususal guff. I don't agree with Jane Kennedy on almost everything, but she was right about the Lib dems - they have debased politics in this city.
