Liverpool Liberal Democrat Flo Clucas in running for top EU post

Leading Liverpool Liberal Democrat Flo Clucas is the running to become president of the EU's assembly of local and regional representatives - the Committee of the Regions.
Cllr Clucas, deputy leader of Liverpool Council, has been unanimously endorsed as the candidate for the ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats) group in the EU.
In February the CoR will elect its 9th president.
Lord Tope, who is supporting Cllr Clucas, said: "The liberals and democrats have contributed enormously to the development of this institution and it is time for that to be recognised.
"Flo Clucas is an excellent candidate and would be an excellent President. She is extremely eloquent and has used this skill time and again at CoR plenaries and elsewhere to work for a united, open and fair Europe.
"She has demonstrated tremendous energy, an impressive ability to achieve concrete results, and is able to open doors at the highest level. In addition, her popularity extends well beyond the ALDE Group."
Cllr Clucas, who has been president of ALDE since 2008, said: "I am delighted by the support received from the Group, and I am committed to work hard for the CoR and its profile in Brussels and in the rest of Europe.
"The local and regional authorities of Europe have an enormous potential to contribute to the development of a people's Europe.
"I aim to unlock that potential and that is why I have accepted to put my name forward."

Food for thought: in the event of a hung parliament, would fragrant Flo's party support a Eurosceptic Conservative government which lines up alongside racists, fascists and homophobes in Europe? If they do, could she really justify remaining a member of her party given her European ambitions?
Of course she could. LibDems are full of principles. If you don't like the ones on offer, she has others.
