And they're off... the election starts here

As our national leaders were firing the starting gun on their general election campaigns today, so too were politicians in Liverpool.

OK it was not in the same style with but stay with me while I explain.

First up were the Liberal Democrats at the city council's executive board this morning.

First came a debate on four fire pumps that have been taken out of use. Council chief executive was required to write to chief fire officer Tony McGuirk to call for their re-instatement. Education supremo Keith Turner was worried that the pumps might be brought back into use to then be removed after the election. HERE is a previous story on the subject.

Then the touch paper was lit in a row with the Government after the city ran out of salt stocks. I've spent all day trying to get to the bottom of it, and the truth is I am none the wiser where the blame lies. That there has been a breakdown in communication between Government agencies, the council, and the salt supplier seems clear though. Could it be that everyone and no one is to blame? Read tomorrow's paper for the full story.

Expect executive board meetings to generate more stories in the run up to the May election as the Liberal Democrats seek to stay in control of the Town Hall.

Then Labour leader Joe Anderson kicked off his campaign with a New Year message on the party's new website this afternoon.

He is far more direct about his message:

"So as much as this is a New Year message, it should also be taken as a statement of intent from Liverpool Labour: We are ready to meet the challenges we face as a city head on. We are determined, ready to fight out city's corner, and make sure we begin to punch our weight as a major international city. And we are ready to pull together and work with stake holders at all levels - be they the city's business leaders, the city's workers, the council's staff, or the residents of Liverpool. All have a stake in the future of our city, and Liverpool Labour is ready to give a full blooded commitment to working along side them.

For too long, the Liberal Democrats have offered us half hearted, part time, small scale leadership. It is high time Liverpool started to think big - and Liverpool Labour are ready to lead the way."

So we can look to lively debates both locally and nationally, let the games campaigns begin.

The fact this rancid fag end council are trying to blame CENTRAL government for not having any grit is as laughable as its absurd.

Perhaps the real blame lies with the fact the coucil has flogged off the control of gritting to the ubquitious "enterprise Liverpool" who have singulary failed the people of this city during this icey spell.

from louise baldocks blog : "Enterprise dont grit pavements"

what kind of blithering incompent of a council signs an agreement with a company that includes them not gritting pavements!

To get to the bottom of this David, just look yet again (see your friends at LDL for another example) at the councils woeful record on public private partnerships.

It is a coincidence that coucils that havent flogged on half its services do have grit? I think not

My mate in Manchester just sent me a text which says "I am not surprised the LibDems have run out of grit in Liverpool, they ran out of road years ago" LOL

If Victor is correct - and part of the Enterprise contract does indeed exclude gritting - then that is shocking, and frankly something I think heads need to roll for.

The city has been brought to a standstill today, and that is directly because of this council's incompetence and inability to write a propper contract. That is gross negligence, and needs to be addressed.

Whatever you think of the Lib Dems, you can hardly accuse them of being half hearted and small scale.

Let's look at the evidence:

Capital of Culture
World Heritage Site
Liverpool One
New Pier Head
Arena and Convention Centre
Cruise Liner terminal
Liverpool Science Park

Where were, or are, Joe Anderson's big ideas to match these? Come on Joe, we're waiting.

Yet more easy rhetoric and no great substance. Reminds me of someone else. David Cameron, anyone?
