BREAKING NEWS Luciana Berger wins Labour race for Wavertree
So after months of waiting the Wavertree constituency Labour party has chosen Luciana Berger to be their candidate for the general election.
I understand that she won comfortably against Wendy Simon and Joyce Still.
Miss Berger said: "I'm proud to have been selected as Labour's candidate and the campaign starts here to keep Liverpool Wavertree Labour.
"Jane Kennedy has served as MP with great pride and passion and I know she has found it a tremendous privilege to represent Liverpool Wavertree for more than 18 years.
"Jane will be a hard act to follow but I'm determined to make Labour's campaign a success and I will be fighting on the issues that matter to all the people of Wavertree.
"Labour is determined to secure growth not choke off recovery and protect the great investment that's been made in our schools, the NHS and the Police.
"In this year's election there's a big choice between Labour or a Tory Government who threaten all the good work that's been done in this city during the last 12 years.
"Sadly the Lib Dem Council has been branded the 'worst council in the country' and opportunities have already been missed. I'm determined that Liverpool Wavertree has the Labour voice it needs standing up and fighting for a fair deal for all."
James Noakes, vice chairman of Liverpool Wavertree Labour Party, said: "We're delighted the members have selected Luciana and I'm confident that whenever the election comes Labour now has the best candidate for Liverpool Wavertree.
"Jane Kennedy will be a hard act to follow but in Luciana we have a candidate who will give us fresh leadership and great enthusiasm.
"Labour has taken the right choices to support the economy, helping businesses and families in Liverpool Wavertree through the downturn.
"At the General Election people have a choice: Luciana will stand up and fight for a fair deal for all in Liverpool Wavertree."

I scooped you by three minutes :-)
This is good news for the local Labour Party - and the worst possible news for the Lib Dems. Berger is going to be fully committed to winning this seat. The hunger and determination she has shown throughout the selection has been admirable - and once that determination is turned to winning the seat, the Lib Dems won't know whats hit them.
The local Labour Party's capacity to campaign has just been multiplied tenfold. Watch this space David- this is only the beginning...
Congratulation to Luciana, I look forward to meeting her on the election trail
Im sure she will be a worthy successor to the Rt Hon Jane Kennedy MP. A wonderful constituency MP and a sad loss.
Colin Eldrudge was telling all and sundry he had won in 05 and look what happened there, given he had the Iraq war to batter the Labour party with and still couldnt win.
When will people realise that we only have Labour MP's in Liverpool and only ever will have.
The sub-plot here is equally interesting. Joe Anderson & the North End Bruisers were quick off the mark backing Wendy Simon. The last thing these unmodified blokish dinosaurs wanted was an educated, independent-minded Southerner to win. But rank-and-file Labour Party members in this city no longer want to have low quality local drabs foisted on them by the political hacks. So they voted overwhelmingly for Luciana Berger, 94-50 or thereabouts, and left Joe Anderson's political judgement looking pretty small-minded.
It's a sad indictment that Liverpool Labour keeps having southerners foisted on them to stand in key seats. Is Liverpool nothing more than a political stepping stone for southern carpet-baggers?
BB
by "foisted" do you mean its sad that the members of liverpool labour party keep voting for "southerners" to represent them?
as that is the reality.

Isn't it strange that, unlike say the Lib Dems at a local level, Labour members vote for their candidates yet opponents always want to suggest that somehow someone was "foisted" on them?
It may come as a surprise but Labour members do cast votes and it is all above board whether that is for council elections or parliamentary ones.
Candidates are only put into place by the national executive when it is too late, if no one stands or there is some issue that prevents an open contest.
But all of that would go against the story that Labour opponents like to believe.
I write as a firm supporter of Labour, not an opponent when using the word 'foisted'. My cynicism however stems from the fact that this is the latest in a number of centrally-imposed 'stitch-ups' of recent years (see Shaun Woodward, Tory turncoat, St Helens, 2001, for example). The manipulation of shortlists to favour the chosen candidate of the Westminster elite is an old trick of all parties. There are plenty of quality local candidates who could have done this job but who were excluded using this device (i.e. men). It's almost as if scousers aren't deemed fit to represent themselves by the political movers and shakers (the Lib Dems must think likewise with Mr Eldridge!)
in response to bb- the wavertree party had the option to vote for an open list or an all women shortlist and bottled it by deliberately not having a vote so as to not pick a fight with the nec. when you say the system excluded "quality" candidates are you saying that liverpool women were not up to the job?
It's funny how every political blog in Liverpool has updated with news of the selection, except for Cllr Baldock's... the Labour Party in fight starts here.
Or maybe Cllr Baldock was out with her candidate yesterday, and hasn't been updated since Thursday?
Get a grip Tom, even your lot can be more imaginitive than that!

Hook, line and sinker...
have watched and listened to the candidate, have been completely underwhelmed. interested that she left her posh car with a five grand personalised reg at home.
was she worried about bringing her expensive car to liverpool? is it contrived?
I抎 have to test with you here. Which is not one thing I often do! I enjoy reading a post that will make people think. Also, thanks for permitting me to comment!
