The Labour race for Wavertree, shortlisting, and a new candidate

By David Bartlett on Jan 12, 10 09:59 PM in

Today we reported how the Labour party has shortlisted three candidates for the Wavertree seat being vacated by Jane Kennedy.

It was no surprise to see Wendy Simon and Luciana Berger on the list (type their name in the search box on my site if you want to know more about them).

However Joyce Still was a new name in the mix.

She has sent us the following biog which I thought might interest some of you:

"Joyce Still was brought up in Old Swan and attended St Mary's Primary School in Wavertree and the Holt Comprehensive in Childwall.  At 18 she trained as a State Registered Nurse at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary and as a Midwife at the Liverpool Maternity Hospital.  She went on to be a School Nurse and a District Nurse at Hartington Road, Speke and Netherley.

"She is married and has 3 children, the eldest two were born in Liverpool.  Joyce is very active in the Labour Party and has been a Labour Councillor.  She was the Labour Party Parliamentary candidate in Guildford in 2001 and in South West Bedfordshire in 2005.

"Her particular interests are Health, Education, Housing and International Affairs.  She is also a very active Trade Unionist and represents her Union Unite on various Regional and National Committtee's.  She sit's on Unite's National Health Sector Committee and is a strong supporter of our National Health Service and Education system.

"She believes that everyone has the right to the same standards of education no matter where they happen to live, that everyone has the right to high standards of health care free at the point of entry and everyone has the right to live in a decent home.

"Joyce is currently employed as a Health Visitor on a challenging housing estate much of her work involves dealing with child protection and domestic violence.  She believes her experience of bringing up a family, whilst juggling demanding work and political commitments has kept her feet firmly on the ground and would stand her in good stead to being Wavertree's next Labour MP."

It doesn't matter who the Labour candidate is. Voters will only be worrying about who is working to make sure Liverpool gets the best opportunities the city deserves.

Who's going to fight for more bobbies on the beat? Who's going to stand up for local services? Who is going to put Liverpool first and not the interests of the candidate's party?

Another Labour MP will only mean 5 more years of Liverpool being taken for granted by someone serving the party whip.

I'm sure the Labour Party will pick who they consider the best candidate. However I dont think they have the barrel of talent they (and Liverpool) needs. Which is why their vote is collapsing across Wavertree.

This 'barrel of talent' that Labour apparently doesn't have. Very interesting, coming from a LibDem. Presumably we're being invited to compare it with their own 'barrel of talent', the scraping of which has brought forth Colin Eldridge. And while we're on the subject of LibDem 'barrels of talent', can anyone explain why LibDems never have a public selection process; why they can't field anyone apart from a family member in several council seats; and why Warren Bradley leads their party locally?

LOL @ Ronnie, and the 'barrel of talent' LibDems being led by the 'barrel scraped' Warren Bradley!

The little feller really is hopeless!

Joyce Still sounds like a premium candidate for the Labor party as she had been involved in many aspects of both education and health thus knowing first hand where the problems lie and how they can be solved.

I don't think that the candidate does not matter because people will vote in their best interest anyway. The masses can't really know a candidate more than his campaign allows them to and that is why knowing about their past and where they have learned and worked can be a good indicator of how life has shaped them. Joyce Still seems like a decent person with a lot of devotion for the kids and the suffering and she has my vote.
