Ricky Tomlinson ready to run for parliament in Wavertree - more bad news for Luciana Berger

rickytomlinson.jpgLIVERPOOL actor and Royle Family star Ricky Tomlinson could urging voters to say "Berger? My arse!" at the general election.

It's a twist in the Luciana Berger selection as Labour candidate for Wavertree that few would have predicted.

But it is news that could do serious harm to Berger and the party.

Click HERE to read the full story.

A meeting of the Socialist Labour Party will decide next week whether they want Tomlinson to be the party's candidate.

The SLP, led by union firebrand Arthur Scargill, is much much to the left of the Labour party. The unquantifiable is just how many Labour voters would go for Tomlinson if he stands. There would be floating voters who would vote for Tomlinson just because he's a celebrity and offers something a bit different.

Last week I said that I thought it would get easier for Miss Berger - look how wrong I was, things could be about to get much much harder.

Hmm, very unsure about this. I don't like the prospect of young shots parachuted into safe seats either - I had Mandelson as an MP for years after all - but some of the reactions to Berger border on that petty insularity that Liverpool needs to leave behind.

That said I'd love to see Ricky Tomlinson in parliament.

Regardless of whether or not LB is the best candidate to represent the Labour party in Wavertree, her selection does continue a pattern. Not since Peter Kilfoyle in 1991 has the Labour party selected a candidate for a Liverpool seat who was born - or even at the time of selection resident - in the city. Compare this to Manchester, where most of its MPs are from the City.

Surley this should be a matter of some concern to those who are active in the Labour party and wider labour movement in the city.

the artice is laughable. When Ricky was waxing lyrical about Eric Heffer did no-one at the echo want to tell him that Eric Heffer was about as scouse as the queen?

Born in Hertford.

was wiki not working at old hall street towers today?

Ricky Tomlinson massive fail, Echo recently in the campaign agaisnt Luciana Berger another fail.

To make a fool of yourslef in the way that Tomlinson has done in that article is surely the death knell for any political ambition.

Perhaps for some added context I will do the echo journalists job and do a cursory google search into how Scargill got on against that well known man of the north east peter mandelson the last time he stood for parliament

2.4% of the vote. even the Lib dems got 15%

David,

A caller to a radio phone in claimed Ricky could not stand as a candidate due to his previous jail sentance and conviction.

Ricky complained bitterly recently that he had trouble gaining entry into the USA because of his conviction.

Perhaps you could check this out? and perhaps Ricky could consider this before damaging the campaign but find praise for Cllr. Anderson.

Ricky Tomlinson (born in Blackpool) has got this all wrong. Yes, he's not happy with this selection and some aspects of the Labour Party but ask him what he thinks of the Tories?

A vote for Ricky Tomlinson is a vote for a Lib Dem MP for Wavertree
