Bad news for Colin Eldridge and Liberal Democrats in Wavertree No. 1

colineldridge100.jpgBad news for the Liberal Democrat's Liverpool Wavertree candidate Colin Eldridge in the form of some stinging criticism from Michael Shield's family.

Michael's mum Maria says she is disgusted by the use of the family on a Lib Dem leaflet.

She said the family was appraoched by Cllr Eldridge for the picture when news of Michael's release from jail was imminent and the family were taking pictures with everyone if it meant Michael would be home quicker.

"They claim to have backed Michael but everyone knows that it was Cllr Joe Anderson who is Labour," said Mrs Shields.

"Cllr Eldridge and the Lib Dems have done nothing to helps us, in fact I was let go from my little cleaning job with the council due time off with my nervous breakdown."

So far it has been one way traffic with the negative stories for Cllr Eldridge's Labour rival Luciana Berger.

But this is incredibly damaging for Cllr Eldridge as Michael's story is so well known across the city.

Lib Dems taking credit for someone else's work - hardly news! It is their reason for being. If they didn't have that they wouldn't know what to do.

Try checking out why Eldridge was campaigning against Alder Hey one year and then trying to have a go at Labour the next.

So no one else supported the campaign apart from Labour party members?
That will come as a surprise to all the rest of us in Liverpool who donated money, signed petitions and did numerous other things to help keep up the profile of the campaign.
In fact London Luciana is probably just about the only person in Liverpool who can't claim to have helped in some way. Not surprisingly she is keeping quiet on the issue, since she wasn't here when Michael was wrongfully imprisoned, and still wasn't here when he was released.

Andrew's right about this. The "Free Michael Shields" campaign was supported by figures like Bishop James Jones, politicians from all sides in Liverpool, many thousands of mainly Liverpool but including many Everton fans as well as the players. I can't believe that this issue [about a photograph which the family agreed to] is being used by the Liverpool Labour Party to help prop their candidate's failing campaign. Didn't Joe Anderson support Wendy Simon to begin with? Most people won't be bothereed either way. Micheal's home now and wants to settle down out of the limelight. It's not the same story as when he was still behind bars. Also, it fails to mention Jack Straw's non-intervention when he was Home Secretary when he had all the facts and did nothing for years.

Are Mrs Shields and Joe Anderson the same person?

No didnt think so

the suggestions that Marie Sheilds has been put up to this is demeaning to her. shame on the Fib dems blatent politiking over this matter.

The fact you have used the term "fib dems" blows your cover as a Labour hack Dave R..

Report card: Must try harder...

Tom

if you are alleging that I am a Labour supporter then I plead guilty!

18.5k supporters (or Hacks) voted for Jane Kennedy in 05. All "hacks" it seems. If I was a wavering Labour supporter being referred to as a hack by someone linked closely to The Fib Dem PPC Id be upset.

I also note with interest that you are standing for election in a safe fib dem ward on May 6th and are therfore likely to be elected.

Are you going to continue to refer to members of the public as "hacks" when elected. or not? I think your future constituents deserve to know.

PS Ive always referred to your party at the fibs since i was misfortunate to have Jenny Tongue as my MP

I think Tom is referring to Labour activists as hacks.. it's a term many people use in politics.

The fact that you're on a politics blog attacking the so called "fib dems" means that more likely you are a Labour activist I reckon, so Tom has a point.

I'm pretty sure he could call you a lot worse!

As for Jenny Tongue, enough said.

fib dems has entered the vernacular as a by word for the Lib (fib) dems

as a cursory google search shows

I have no more connection with the Labour party than any normal strong Labour voter

And as a member of the public resent being called a hack by a possible future cllr of this city. If I was involved in the Lab Campaign I would encourage them to draw attention to the fact Tom thinks Labour voters are "hacks"
