No Shriking violet, the price of power for Labour's Steve Munby

By David Bartlett on Jun 22, 10 03:20 PM in

stevemunbyflowers.jpgPosing for pictures with flowers is probably not what Steve Munby had in mind when he came into politics.

But ahem publicity stunts are part and package of being a cabinet member on a big city council.

Cllr Munby, elected to serve Riverside since 1998 is now cabinet member for neighbourhood services in the new Labour administration, is known no nonsense approach.

Not known for being a shrinking violet Cllr Munby does not look too pleased to be on the snap to promote free hanging basket for city residents.

No, no - that's Steve Munby looking pleased! Free hanging baskets are a nice idea though I'm surprised they've not been dressed out in Council colours

So announce you are cutting most of the day centres in the city and at the same time demonstrate money for giveaways! Wasn't councillor anderson complaining about the cost of the flowers in this mornings Post??????

Hanging baskets are there to create a good environment- plants , colours, nature, all ar part of what the human spirit needs...gardens, insects, all contribute to keeping our spirit healthy, and in times of increasing hardship and worries, such small things can make a huge difference...like the importance of clean streets and pavements, the view of grass, trees, and so on- all have a positive impact on our spirits....
Please dont confuse or underestimate this with a waste of money. Its NOT!

Joe Anderson was indeed complaining about Council spending on flowers earlier today. This has nothing whatsoever to do with Cllr Munby's hanging baskets. These cost the Council or local taxpayer not a single penny. Cllr Munby raises the cash for this splendid community gesture by badgering the local Registered Social Landlords for a modest contribution to brightening up the streets in the neighbourhood. Oh that Labour was always so imaginative. It's small; it's simple; it's cheap - and it's brilliant. Better than any number of Superlambanana/penguin/albatrosses

We have been paying for hanging baskets and tubs of annuals and perennials in our ward for 4 years. The goodwill and the joie de vivre is well worth the few hundred pounds of expenditure, not to mention that it brightens the neighbourhood.

Nice one Steve

I am shocked by this article. I always thought Steve Mambo was a decent and intelligent bloke so I am appalled to see that he wants to bring back hanging.
But at least he still has the decency to bring flowers. So who's first? Can you get tickets from Liverpool Direct? Or are they first?
