Daily Post (short column): Don't celebrate demise of Merseyside's speed camera network

IT'S TEMPTING to celebrate the demise of Merseyside's speed camera network.

The region's 90 cameras are staying in place, but the number actually operating at any one time will be significantly reduced because of a 27% cut to road safety budgets.

We've all shuddered on the occasion we've spotted a yellow box late and hit the brakes or seen the flashbulb glare in the rearview mirror.

Hysterically labelled as money grabbing machines, it became national sport to complain about the Gatso.

Speed is a factor in many road accidents. But the fact that none of us like to own up to is that speed cameras do help lower speeds - and therefore save lives.
