The University of Liverpool's brush with the Chinese building trade

Newsnight last night carried a special report on White Horse village in China.

The issue of corruption was highlighted as big problem in a nearby city in the building trade.

In May I visited the University of Liverpool's joint venture the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou Industrial Park.

The "park" has more than 720,000 residents, slightly bigger than an industrial park in the UK.

I digress. In the middle of the university's main building is a step where two halves of the building meet.

Apparently two construction firms had to be used because of a wrangle in the local communist party as to how the contracts should be divvied up.

You're kidding me! You mean the BBC went all the way to China to discover corruption in the building industry? Corruption is endemic throughout the building industry in this country, never mind China.
