The rise of Richard Kemp

By David Bartlett on Dec 22, 10 10:41 AM in Liverpool City Council

richard_kemp.jpgLIVERPOOL Liberal Democrat Richard Kemp is widely regarded as one of the best orators at the town hall.

He is also the leader of the Lib-Dems on the Local Government Association from where he is becoming accomplished at dispensing barbed comments about the coalition.

Branding local government minister Grant Shapps and his boss Eric Pickles Laurel and Hardy sums up how many councillors feel about the pair and the cuts their department has handed down.

His blog, launched earlier in the year, has quickly established itself as one of the most readable in city politics.

Today he wades into the Vince Cable row with an insight from an ex-Labour minister who tells him that when in power "we didn't have the guts to deal with Murdoch - quite the opposite".

This is the first time I have ever read Kemp's blog.
You say it has established itself as one of the most readable in the city. To whom?
I am tempted to reply to the title of his blog with: "And who gives a toss?"
But perhaps people should respond to the hypocrisy of the man, rather than his giant ego.
He says of himself and his fellow Lib Dems: "We don’t tow the line; we fight for what we believe in. We practice what we preach."
Oh aye?
We tow the line to David Cameron and the Tories who we consistently attacked at the last election.
We believe in the most savage cuts in local govt spending for decades.
We practice (sic) equality and opportunity for the most vulnerable in our society by cutting housing benefit and the public services which they rely on.
What a foul hypocrite is the man who masterminded the desolation of the Boot Estate in pursuit of his own ego-mania.
And whose belief in 'liberal' values, caused him to publicly demand that the people of Liverpool should be denied the opportunity to read damaging allegations
against the cabal of officials at the Town hall, which his administration had allowed to run out of control.
Incidentally, Kemp was writing a book with Henshaw about their 'Liverpool miracle'. Until it quickly turned into a total disaster.
Dont be naive and give Kemp any credit for anything - except self-promotion, hypocrisy and self-aggrandisement.
By promoting these kind of people you foster the bad politics which bedevils the city.
Merry Christmas!

I like the way his blog, described as "one of the most readable" (and it is) is in direct contrast to his ward colleague's efforts!
