Kevin Matthews: Labour Party Liverpool Conference diary fifth and final day

So the Labour Party's 2011 conference in Liverpool came to a close today following a successful week for the party and for the city.

But before red flags stopped waving there was an unexpected, unscheduled last minute addition.

Liverpool Lib Dem councillor and the party's spokeswoman for communities, safety and housing Lynnie Hinnigan took to the stage to tell the conference, the city and the country that she could "no longer defend the indefensible": "My aspirations for my daughter who is 19 and is a single parent was 'you will go to university'. Now I am trying to do everything to go out of my way to say 'you've got a two-year-old son, I don't want you to have that debt. That is wrong. People in Speke where I live need to have aspirations and their children need aspirations. The reason I'm coming to Labour is because Labour cares. Nick Clegg lied. He lied to me and he lied to the people of Liverpool."

So Cllr Hinnigan became the latest member of the party. She joined 65,000 other people who have signed up in the last year alone.

She is the latest in a long line of Liberal Democrat members and supporters who have found that the Lib Dems are not what they pretend to be, but are instead a prop for one of the biggest right-wing governments we've ever seen in Britain.

What we heard throughout the week is that it is Ed Miliband's key goal is to fill the aspiration deficit in the UK which led to thousands taking to the streets in August.

And what did we find out throughout the week.

We found that the Labour Party is the party of aspiration. It is the party of an improved education for all, not just the wealthy few. It is the party which is for protecting the environment and the country's greenbelt. It is the only party which will fight Tory-Lib Dem plans to privatise the NHS. It is the only party with a plan for economic growth.

Stating the obvious? Maybe. But sometimes you need to state the obvious to remind people that 'they're not all the same' after all.

And we found that despite his media profile Ed Miliband really is human, and after a year in the party's top job, he may just this week have risen to the occasion and not only survived a make or break conference for his leadership, but exceeded it.

And the thousands of Labour Party members from all around the country, as well as the nation's media found Liverpool to be a thoroughly modern city, finally killing the age-old stereotypes.

It will be a test of time to see if Ed and co have succeeded in killing media-fuelled misconceptions of Labour and set the party on the road to Downing Street.

Here's hoping.
