Liverpool needs a champion, let the elected mayor be it

An elected mayor could be a great thing for Liverpool.

David Bartlett, the headmaster of this school of philosophers, will be sure to keep the world up to date on the runners and riders in the race between now and May.

Whoever it is though has a remarkable opportunity - they will be not only an ambassador for this city, but also wield real power.

This is a place not short on civic pride, but it's also a place not short of detractors.

The mayor must be cheerleader-in-chief for Liverpool, and should be aware they'll be watched like a hawk to ensure they deliver for city.

If the powers are to be the same as the leader of the council as stated then the only difference is that one does not have to whip the members of ones party and can just decide to do something and tis done there is no one to question it. If there is anyone out there who never makes any mistakes and never allow themselves to be influenced into bad ideas then they would be a rarity.
If someone were to get the post and turn out to be unsuitable how long and how much damage could they do before they could be replaced ?.
Although some would say way too short, an election every year may well keep the incumbent on their toes.

Thank you Mr Bartlets, I knew I could rely on your support. Now that I have you and the Post behind my campaign I can already smell victory. Either that or the drains are backing up again. You can have the exclusive interview with me after my Sticky tape victory parade through the city. Now, shall I write a piece for you outlining my plans for the city or do you think they might nick them? I can give you one exclusive now. I have been in talks with Peel holdings over the Unesquick report about the Liverpool Waters scheme. It's sorted. They are going to build them underground. That way they can be as big as they like and it won't spoil the view of the 3 black coffins.

I hope Joe isn't upset with me for standing against him but he didn't tell me he was going to do this. Anyway I am more or less on his side and he can be one of my deputies. But if he is determined to stand against me, it could split the vote and let Foghorn Leggarty in.

I think I have the best chance but to be fair to Joe I am willing to sort this out man to man. Have you ever seen that film with Oliver Reed and Alan Bates? The one where they wrestle in front of the fire? Well That's how we'll sort it.

There is a fabulous fireplace in the Town Hall so not only will it be an exciting contest but we'll have the BBC in to show it live offering a magnificent showcase for the city.

Now i know what you are thinking, in the film Reed and Bates were both naked. Well we will of course compromise. We will both wear Beatles wigs. Roger Phillips has already agreed to commentate and Ref Makin will be the Rex. Flo Clucas will be showing the cards with the round numbers, although I have asked she wears a 1-piece rather than a bikini. It's more dignified.
