Liverpool Conservative president Tony Caldeira hints at elected mayor bid
LIVERPOOL businessman and president of the city's Conservatives Tony Caldiera has hinted he would like to be the party's candidate in the mayoral election.
The man who made his cash through his cushion empire has confirmed the party will be fielding a candidate.
Some had believed the party could throw its weight behind a high profile independent, like celebrity stylish Herbert Howe.
I've just caught up with Mr Caldeira and he had this to say: "An elected mayor for Liverpool is clearly a tremendous opportunity for the city.
"Liverpool Conservatives will meet soon to select a candidate for this post.
"Personally I believe it would be a great honour to lead Liverpool as mayor but the final decision on the Conservative candidate will be made by the party in due course."

I suppose this is a bit like going into your local shop on a Saturday and buying a lottery ticket. Deep down you know you are not going to wake up a millionaire the next day but you do it anyway.
The difference here is that there is an Alternative Vote system in place which is limited to only first and second preference.
The more 'unlikely' candidates that go in means that if your first and second candidate choices do not make the final cut then your vote will be disregarded and will have the same effect as not having voted at all.
There is an arguement for having fewer alternative candidates so that one of them may make a fight of it in a head to head.
I see that survey re entrepreneurs being prone to narcissism. Maybe this guy and Phil Moffat could compete for the Liverpool title. Surely he should be spending time with his business, given that Caldeira made a £3m loss in 2010.
I've heard the Tories are going to put up Philip Blond, the 'Red Tory' balloon of sleaze and b/s who coined the term 'Big Society'
