Herbert Howe pulls out of race for Liverpool mayor
CELEBRITY stylist Herbert has sensationally quit the race to become Liverpool mayor.
The announcement comes just two days after he launched his campaign at Liverpool's Hilton Hotel.
He had promised to take on Liverpool FC over the dereliction around Anfield stadium, clean up the city centre drinking culture, and promote young people and the elderly.
Campaign manager Berni Turner said: "It was getting too nasty, and too political. It was not why he came into it for.
"He made the decision last night. He would have been an absolutely fantastic mayor, that is why I was helping with his campaign."
UPDATE: He has just told the Philips phone in on the Beeb: "I am frigtened of the political [element]. Somebody said to me 'we are going to find skeletons in your cupboard', that is a viperous attitude."
He said he did not want to be thrown into the 'lion's den'.
He also revealed that he campaign was set to feature an aircraft, presumably with a vote Herbert banner trailing behind.

Ahhh, that's more like it. Labour the nasty party is back.
"I am frigtened of the political [element]. Somebody said to me 'we are going to find skeletons in your cupboard', that is a viperous attitude."
Disgusting way to treat an independent candidate. Who will the wolves go for next? This is why I refuse to vote for Labour/Lib Dems. Our local political system is toxic to the core.
What a clownish thing to say, Mcann. As if Labour gives two monkeys about Herbie. The likely source of any poison will be found, if anywhere, among those candidates jostling to come (a distant) 2nd to Joe Anderson
Herbert showed breathtaking naivety if he honestly thought the Mayoral election fight wasn't going to be political and that his opponents and the press weren't going to be looking for skeletons in his cupboard. Having previously dismissed claims that he was a joke candidate Herbert has now gone and shown himself to be just that... a joke.
And there you can see some of the nastiness from Wavertree Warrior. A Joke.
I would wager that since ex lib dem councillors Bernie and Frank were involved in Herbert's campaign that you may not need to look too far for those having a go at Herbert. Will the two of them be expelled from the Lib dems for helping a rival candidate to Richard Kemp?
Here I was thinking politics was supposed to be about policy and what is best for this city's interests. To hound someone out through intimidation shows a total failure of our local politics.
It's supposed to be the issues and the voters that decide who the mayor will be. Yet in this city its power, money and recruiting people to dig up as much dirt as possible on the opposition. I agree with Simon, the wolves of Isengaard will return, bearing the mark of fat joe's red hand.
Kick him out Liverpool.
I wasn't being nasty, Walton Wobbler, just blunt.
Anyone who knows the slightest thing about Liverpool politics would know there's that the likelihood of a clean fight focussing solely on policy and never once mentioning personality is about as likely as the Lib Dems retaking control of the council after May's council elections.
I'm actually disappointed that Herbert didn't have what it takes to stay the course and, as a high profile and flamboyant independent candidate, give the candidates from the political parties a run for their money. Whether or not he would have made a good mayor is now a moot point, but at least he had what he thought was best for Liverpool at the heart of his campaign - can the same be said for all the candidates from the main parties?
Fair enough Wavertree Warrior. Now you have put things into context,I withdraw the charge of you being nasty and we are probably in agreement.
