RIP Vera Best who passed away at the weekend

ONE of Liverpool's longest-serving councillors passed away this weekend.

Liberal Democrat stalwart Vera Best had recently resigned her Allerton and Hunts Cross seat due to ill health.

Deputy leader Richard Kemp said he was "very sorry" to learn of the passing of a councillor of "25 years' standing".

She was first elected to the council in 1986, but lost her seat in 1990. A year later, she was selected once more and had been an elected representative until now.

Her seat will not be contested at Thursday's local elections - a by-election will be held at a later date.

When she announced her intention to step down, Lib Dem leader Paula Keaveney said: "Vera is one of the people who give councillors a good name. She will be missed."
