Labour at war at Merseytravel: Joe Hanson's statement over demand for Mark Dowd's resignation

By David Bartlett on May 28, 12 06:39 PM in Labour

joe_hanson_hs.jpgJoe Hanson, the man who wrote the damning report into Merseytravel, has explained why half the Labour party on the transport authority believe their colleague and chairman Mark Dowd needs to resign.

He said: "It was with great disappointment that I had to come to a position were I had no alternate other than to sign a letter of this nature to Cllr Mark Dowd Chairman of Merseytravel.

"Every organisation has a defining moment in its history and I believe that Merseytravel has now reached that moment.

"We can either move forward making Merseytravel and it governance fit for the 21st century and in doing so deliver a world class service to the residents in Merseyside or we can allow it to drift back back to its poor governance, poor practise's, a public facing body that does not deliver value for money for the local taxpayers in Merseyside.

"I believe the staff of Merseytravel and residents in our region deserve a best in class service and that will only be achieved by Mark Dowd stepping down as chair of the authority."

As mentioned in a previous post, Mark Dowd has now made clear he will not resign.

Dowd should have stepped down in 2008, with the DA's Public Interest report. He was responsible for the governance of the organisation and didn't do his job properly. But he was given the chance to put things right, and hasn't done enough. The district auditor's response makes this clear. That's it. No amount of bragging about Merseytravel's achievements will change this - they don't actually have anything to do with it.
Why not go while you've still got a bit of dignity, instead of hanging on to the bitter end, sounding increasingly desperate and out of touch?
And, about the bragging - I really wish organisations would stop doing this at any and very opportunity - LCC appear to have the same disease, caught from the spin-mad LDL. They'd all save everyone a lot of time and energy if they didn't all regurgitate acres of this stuff in every single document they produce. Our mission. Our vision. Our values. Our awards.... Please change the record (to Our Operations, Our Income, Our Expenditure, perhaps?? - the real results, in other words).

How much power does the new mayor want?
Picture the scene : Anderson stooge Hanson gets chair of the Transport Authority;
Anderson stooge Jane Kennedy (and national Labour Party apologist) gets the police commisioners job;
Newman gets deposed on the fire authority, and Anderson stooge Hanratty gets the chairs job.
Mayor Joe will then have total control of all he surveys. Game over!
