His endorsement comes as hustings for the Labour nomination start tonight at the Devonshire House Hotel at 7pm.

On Wednesday there will be a hustings in Wirral, on Thursday in St Helens, and on Sunday 20th in Sefton.

But there will not be a hustings in Knowsley, where rival canidate Bill Weightman has a seat.

The contest is widely seen as being between Ms Kennedy and Peter Kilfoyle, although second preferences may dictate the outcome.

Mayor Anderson said: "Jane's experience in Northern Ireland makes her uniquely qualified for the role of Police Commissioner.

"We are fortunate to have a candidate who can work constructively with all agencies and partners for the good of the whole of Merseyside. I have worked with Jane for many years and have no hesitation in recommending her."

Why's that, Joe? Is it because Merseyside is so similar to Northern Ireland?

useful but...? said:

Likely to alienate a lot of Labour Members outside of Liverpool (and maybe some inside).
Also, endorsements are often seen as useful but they can work the other way when that appears to be the focus of the campaign.

I'd prefer Kilfoyle myself (if I had to choose between the two). He doesn't suffer fools gladly like the rest of the Labour party.

Obviously a non-Labour person for commissioner is preferable, one best at cutting the huge bureaucracy and expenditure of Merseyside Police. We need a tory.

Not sure about this said:

Not sure the leader of the Labour group in Liverpool shoud be endorsing any candidate.
With his control over the Labour group and his new position of mayor this is tantamount to an instruction to his people on how to vote.
While he may personally vote for whoever he wants, would have been good to see democracy being given a chance.

Why would the residents of Merseyside want a crime commissioner who’s only experience is the streets of Northern Ireland, what we need is a commissioner who understand the issues around policing the streets of Merseyside. We have one candidate Bill Weightman who has been on Merseyside Police Authority for 17 years, the last 8 years as chair. I have seen major changes in North Huyton and the focus turned around so that the criminal is the one who is afraid of walking the streets, this has been achieved using a multi agency approach lead by the police.
Joe Anderson is wrong to use his position to endorse one candidate giving Labour members the impression that the labour group is supporting Jane
