Liberal Democrats try to scupper first Liverpool mayoral scrutiny panel

Liverpool Liberal Democrat leader Richard Kemp is attempting to scupper the first public grilling of Liverpool's new mayor Joe Anderson.

The newly-formed Mayoral scrutiny panel is due to meet for the first time tonight.

But Cllr Kemp has called for the meeting to be cancelled because no official agenda papers have been circulated.

He said: "What's the point of having the meeting if there are no papers to discuss? They are supposed to be circulated five days in advance.

He then referred to a story revealed in yesterday's ECHO about fashion advice given to female Labour councillors by the party's deputy whip Pam Thomas.

"The Labour party seem to be more interested in the colour of their women councillors' lipstick than they are in major constitutional issues."

A council spokesman confirmed that the meeting was still due to go ahead.

He added: "Members will be discussing their work programme of the panel for the next year.

"There will also be an opportunity for members to put questions to the mayor."
