Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson's promise to resign... if 60,000 people demand it
AS POLITICAL promises go, vowing to resign if just 15% of people in Liverpool demand your resignation is pretty wild.
As my colleague Marc reports today Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson last night sensationally vowed to resign if 60,000 city residents called for him to go.
He made the promise at a mayoral scrutiny meeting last night.
As it turns out the likelyhood of anyone managing to get 60,000 names on a petition are pretty slim.
And in fact if someone managed to get 5% of the 330,000 electorate, roughly 16,500, to sign a petition the mayor could be recalled an a new election held. Again unlikely.
At the mayoral elections in May, Mayor Anderson received a 57.7% (58,450) share of the vote of those who turned out - but 69% of the electorate did not go to the polls.
