Luciana Berger: Labour Party Conference 2012 diary - day five
Conference began its last day with a debate on Local Government.
Shadow Local Government Secretary Hillary Benn called for a new settlement between Whitehall and Local Government, where power is given to communities rather than being concentrated in big government departments.
Later fellow Liverpool MP and Shadow Education Secretary, Stephen Twigg delivers his speech to conference.
He is expected to announce a "New Deal for Teachers", including a doubling in size of the successful Teach First plan, a scheme that encourages university students to teach for at least two years. Following Stephen Deputy Leader Harriet Harman will close the conference.
That's it from my diary and for party conference 2012. Manchester provided a great setting for what was an extremely successful conference for the Labour Party. However, I was pleased to hear many people speak so positively about last year's event in Liverpool, and ask whether conference will be returning here. I certainly hope conference comes back to Liverpool in future years, to give us even more opportunities to showcase our fantastic city to the rest of the country.
Parliament returns next week, and I will be continuing to campaign on a number of issues, including the damaging cuts that the government are planning for our Fire Service. I will also be continuing with my programme of Luciana Listens events to hear what matters to people here in Liverpool, and raise their concerns directly in the House of Commons. But right now I'm off to watch Stephen's speech. Thanks for reading.
