The party is over for Labour

By Frank Mckenna on Oct 2, 09 10:11 AM

Despite the best efforts of that perennial marketer and master of the sound bite Peter Mandelson, the Labour Party Conference appeared to be more of a wake and preparation for defeat than a celebration and a hopeful look to the future, as the governing party gathered in Brighton this week.

Gordon Brown's speech may have been well received in the conference hall, but it has made little impact on the voting intentions of the great British public; and I would hazard a guess that even if he had produced a Blairesque type of performance, he would still be heading for a drubbing at the polls.
The problem for Labour is that people are fed up with them. There seems to be little or no dynamism from Brown & co and they have run out of ideas. Notably, Brown's 'best bit' was when he listed the many achievements of the Government over the past 12 years. Unfortunately, this was not supplemented with a forward looking, engaging vision and agenda for the next 12.
Indeed, many of the 'new' announcements appeared to be ideas recycled from the past. And, having been in Government for a dozen years was it not a little cheeky to be highlighting the major problems the country still faces in the area of law and order?
Of course, the big announcement of the week came not from within the conference centre, but from The Sun. Its proclamation that it would be supporting David Cameron's Conservative's at the next General Election, simply confirmed the worst fears of what delegates already knew. Labour has had it.
The only real question now is how bad a defeat will they suffer. A landslide is predicted, but Team Cameron has yet to win over the hearts and minds of the public in the way that the Blair project most certainly did in 1997.
Cameron and his party's performance next week, as they conference in Manchester, and in the run up to the election next year, will decide how big their gain, and Labour's loss, really is. Because nobody is listening to Gordon; or even Peter anymore. We all want to know if the Tories are up to the task ahead.
