Get ready for Comic-Con 2009

By Cheryl Mullin on Jul 18, 09 09:03 AM

Next weekend sees quite possibly one of the biggest events in any self-respecting geeks calendar - Comic-Con.
Every year thousands of fans from around the world make the pilgrimage to the San Diego Convention Centre to immerse themselves in three whole days of geek!
But what's the big deal? What makes Comic-Con so different from any other fanboy convention?

Comic-Con is a three day celebration of everything comic/scifi/fantasy with a sprinkle of action for gamers. It features panels, seminars and workshops with some of the industry's top writers, artists and publishers. It has screening rooms devoted to dozens of different genres from animation, and manga to independent movies and gaming. It is also host to the near legendary fancy dress contest The Masquerade - where for one night only you can become your ultimate comic book hero.

More importantly Comic-Con has become THE place for sneak previews of up-coming movies and comic releases (The Iron Man sequel being the big rumour for next weekend) And if you are lucky enough to get over to San Diego for the event, you can get your hands on Comic-Con exclusive action figures from industry giants such as Hasbro and Mattel.
And this year's convention is going to be extra special, as it celebrates its 40th year. Just some of the big names due to appear include Tim Burton, James Cameron, Gerard Butler, Adam West, Wil Wheaton, Seth Green, Russell T Davies , John Barrowman and a rumoured appearance from David Tennant; with speculation that he'll be making a big announcement.
