Terminator franchise auction date looms
The rights to a science fiction icon will be sold to the highest bidder this month in an auction described as a "once in a decade" opportunity for studio bosses,
Interest in buying theTerminator film franchise has already been high, with sources close to the sale suggesting the eventual price could top $100m (£61m).
The rights to the franchise are being auctioned off by the Halcyon Company, the firm behind this year's blockbusting stinker Terminator Salvation.
Starring Christian Bale as John Connor, it grossed $375m (£228m) globally and astoundingly breathed new life into the franchise.
Taken as a whole, the four terminator movies have grossed $1.4bn (£854m) at the box office, and taken an additional $1.6bn (£976m) from the sale of DVDs, video games and graphic novels.
As such, the auction of the franchise's intellectual property rights is being carefully followed by Hollywood.
The sale was prompted by Halycon's filing for bankruptcy protection earlier this year.
Allan Mayer, spokesman for Halcyon Company, said: "This is the only major film franchise that isn't already owned by a big studio. If not a once in a lifetime opportunity, it is certainly a once in a decade one."
The auction, on November 20th is being conducted by FTI Capital Advisors on behalf of Halcyon.
All of the major film studios are said to have registered their interest, with Sony Pictures seen as an leading contender, a source claims.
Private equity firms have also been involved in the bidding process, which could see the franchise stay in Halcyon's hands under new finance.
The successful buyer is likely to pay upwards of $60m (£37m) for the rights, the price realised in the recent sale of the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles brand to MTV's children's cartoon network Nickelodeon.
The Turtles' franchise is thought to have brought in around $420m (£256m) worldwide - less than a third of the Terminator series.
As such it is believed the final figure for the Terminator sale may hit nine figures.
The eventual winner will not be revealed until early next year.
But it will mean the rebooted franchise will return for a fifth outing on the big screen.
Mr Mayer said: "One way or another there is going to be more Terminator movies."
