THE HULK

Part man, part beast, all Hulk!
Today's character came from the creative minds of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and burst his way onto the scene in 1962.
Inspired by Frankenstein and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, The Hulk is the physical manifestation of the monster inside each of us.

Originally portrayed as grey, the colour caused so many problems for colourist Stan Goldberg, that it was decided to make him green - and so The Hulk we all know and love was born.
Amazingly the comic had a very limited run and was cancelled after just six issues. But the Hulk had proved so popular that the character was given various guest appearances in Fantastic Four and was later portrayed as a founding member of The Avengers. The Hulk.jpg
Just over a year after the run was cancelled, The Hulk became one of two special features in Tales to Astonish.
It was in these comics that the idea of mild mannered Bruce Banner's transformation being triggered by his emotions was introduced.
The Incredible Hulk enjoyed continued success throughout the 60s and 70s, with a second title - The Rampaging Hulk - introduced in 1977.
In addition to the mainstream version of The Hulk, there have been various storylines taking place in other fictional universes in which Bruce Banner's transformation, back story or personality vary greatly.
In 1987, writer Peter David altered Banner's relationship with the Hulk, introducing the idea that Banner was seriously emotionally damaged before the accident which turned him into the Hulk.
David changed the character again in 1991, where a hypnotised Banner evolves into a scary new beast with the vast power of the Savage Hulk, the cunning of the grey Hulk, and the intelligence of the man, Bruce.
This third personality, or merged Hulk, would go on to be called The Professor.
Then there is Planet Hulk, where a group of superhero leaders decide Hulk is too dangerous to remain on Earth and so he is banished into space to seek out an uninhabited planet in which to live out his life.
But his ship goes off course and crash lands on the planet Sakaar, where a weakened Hulk is captured and forced to fight as a Gladiator.
In World War Hulk, he returns to Earth with an army raised on Sakaar intent on punishing those responsible for his banishment.
