Spider-Man
Marvel's flagship character and company mascot, readers have been following the adventures of Spider-Man since 1962.
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, he swung into action in Amazing Fantasy #15.
When Peter Parker first appeared, teenage characters were few and far between.
Peter was an orphan, being raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in the poorer part of New York City.
Peter is a science whizz, but considered a nerd by his fellow students who take the opportunity to bully him whenever they can.
One day Peter and his classmates are watching a science experiment when he is bitten on the hand by a radioactive spider.
Overnight he 'mutates' gaining the power to climb walls, jump huge distances and gains the super strength of a spider.
Stan Lee had to convince then Marvel editor Martin Goodman to give the newly created Spider-Man a chance.
In the 1990s, editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco said Spider-Man would probably never have been given the chance to get into print had he been created today, given the 'vetting' process which potential characters now have to go through.
A few months after Spider-Man's first apperance, the sales figures for his issue were reviewed and Marvel was shocked to find it had been one of its highest selling titles.
In 1963, The Amazing Spider-Man made its debut on the stands and a cultural icon was born.
By the late 1970s early 1980s two further comics had been spawned, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man.
In 1990 a fourth title was launched under the watchful eye of artist Todd McFarlane. The comic featured several variation covers and went on to sell over 3 million copies.
Spider-Man also inspired some of Marvel's best supervillains, with our favourite webslinger battling The Green Goblin, Dr Octopus, Venom and of course Mysterio.
Such is the popularity of the character that in 2004 an Indian version of Spider-Man appeared.
Released in conjunction with Marvel, the comic told the story of Pavitr Prabhakar, a promising young Mumbai student who is bitten by a spider and mutates into Spider-Man. Sadly it only ran for four issues.
