Death's Head

By Cheryl Mullin on Dec 1, 09 09:00 AM

The festive season is nearly upon us and to celebrate Geekworld is doing a Comic Character a day to Christmas.
An alternative to those boring picture advent calendars and much less fattening than the chocolate ones - but oddly not quite as satisfying...

DEATH'S HEAD

A robotic bounty hunter, sorry Freelance Peacekeeping Agent, created by writer Simon Furman and artist Geoff Senior. Deaths Head.jpg
Death's Head was supposed to be a disposable character for a single story-arc in the UK Transformers comics.
But Furman and Senior both saw something more in the character and wanted to develop it further.
The problem was that the characters appearing in Transformers comics tended to be absorbed into the 'title's catchall copyright' giving Hasbro the right to contest ownership of the character.
To get around this, Death's Head made his debut in a Marvel UK strip High Noon Tex, published in various titles in 1987, before appearing in Transformers.
As well as brushing shoulders with Rodimus Prime and Galvatron et al , Death's Head also had encounters with the Fantastic Four, Iron Man and our very own Doctor Who - phew!
In fact, Doctor Who actually claims to have been responsible for sending Death's Head to the Transformers universe in the first place.
Death's Head proved such a popular character that after the first run of comics ended, he was revamped for inclusion in the next wave of Marvel UK publications.
Death's Head II became one of the company's biggest export sellers, with the limited release four-issue run becoming an ongoing series.
2005 saw a third incarnation of the character, Death's Head 3.0, introduced after Marvel UK fans voted for him to be revamped and given a new storyline in Marvel's celebrated Amazing Fantasy title.
In 2006 a Death's Head mini-series was pitched for Marvel's Ultimate line, which the company passed on - the character has remained dormant ever since.
