Robert Downey Jr out of Cowboys and Aliens

By Cheryl Mullin on Jan 12, 10 11:21 AM

Robert Downey Jr has opted out of starring in Cowboys and Aliens in favour of making a Sherlock Holmes sequel.

The movie, which would have reunited him with Iron Man helmer Jon Favreau, is adapted from the comic book which sees aliens land in 19th century Arizona and attempt to enslave the population.
With Downey Jr out of the picture, DreamWorks are now seeking a new leading man to fill the void for the film, which has a 2011 release date.
His departure has sparked rumours about a sequel to his recent movie Sherlock Holmes, which has pulled in $296,453,093 worldwide since its release.
