Batman and Superman comics sell for over $2m

By Cheryl Mullin on Feb 26, 10 11:29 AM

It's been an expensive week for two comic collectors who have paid over $2m for the very first Superman and Batman comics.

On Monday, a 1938 edition of Action Comics #1, was sold for $1m by New York City auction site ComicConnect.com to a 'well known collector.' Action Comics No. 1.jpgDetective Comics #27.jpg
Yesterday that record was broken when a Batman fan paid $1,075,500 for a 1939 copy of Detective Comics #27.
Barry Sandoval, director of operations at Heritage Auction Galleries who handled the sale said: "It pretty much blew away all of our expectations and now it's the highest price ever raised for a comic book."
He said the seller, who wished to remain anonymous, bought the Batman comic in the late 1960s for just $100.
J.C. Vaughn, associate publisher of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, said it had been predicted it would be these two comics to break the million dollar barrier. Both comics were in very good condition - scoring 8.0 out of 10.
There are thought to be only 100 copies of Action Comics No. 1 left in existence, and only a handful have ever been rated so highly.
