Showing a Clean Pair of Heels
I must finally be growing up, because when I took up my new hobby of marathon running I decided to hold off splashing out on the cool tracksuits and "I'm a serious runner" Asics trainers until I'd proved to myself I was fully committed.
Too many times the moment the unpleasant realisation has set in, that to be any good I've got to actually practice, the gear has begun its lonely trek from cupboard to garage to charity shop.
My new sport started last weekend in Birmingham with a three mile fun run (yes it is an oxymoron, and the brain that connects not only fun to run but also to an 8.30 start on a Sunday morning needs strong medication). Not only did I wheeze past the finishing line beetroot red and in ankle flapper Tesco tracksuit bottoms, but in trainers two sizes too big, courtesy of a friend. Because although I did remember to pack two pairs of high heeled boots for the occasion, I forgot my running shoes. And who was to know such a sartorial feast would be captured on Central TV later that afternoon, when I was spotted by an eagle eyed friend lurching past the ice cool news presenter, Jo Malin. At least Paula (Radcliffe) knows my pain.
I think I've earned a new hoodie at least, and they're handy for all sorts of stuff.
