All that glitters is not gold

TWO treats yesterday, which seem to sum up two halves of Liverpool's Capital of Culture offering - first, a tour of the new Debenhams store and then a preview of the Klimt exhibition at the Tate.

Aside from being highlights of 2008, the Liverpool One development (where Debenhams is an anchor store) and the showcase of paintings have two things in common...

1. They both open to the public this week, and 2. they are bright and shiny - brand new fixtures and fitting for the stores and lots of gold, gemstones and mother-of-pearl embellishment for Klimt.

I can't see the excitement over 160 new shops at Liverpool One waning for some time, and I for one can't wait to have a proper look around later today.

But although the Tate exhibition will be all over by the time the second L1 phase is launched in September, it will glisten in our memories long after Paradise Street has become spotted with chewing gum.
