Celebrity Sauce!
We'll buy anything if a celeb's on the front of it. At least that's the theory.
Every TV chef has their face on a food line or cookery equipment - Nigella and her
kitchenware, Gordon Ramsey chocolates (who incidentally, about six years ago when I interviewed him practically bit my head off when I asked if considered himself a "celebrity" chef), and even though we never really saw him cook, Lloyd Grossman does pretty well with his sauces.
Even if it's difficult to see why a certain person might be qualified to technically produce their range, we'll still just about buy it if there's a tenuous link and they're glamorous enough. I'm thinking WAGs and perfume, Lily Allen and her clothing range, George Foreman and his famous grill and film star Paul Newman's salad dressings.
But enough's enough.
In Tesco the other day I noticed the less than photogenic viz of Barry Newman, wrinkly reviewer of films, winking out at me from a jar of pickled onions. With his clapperboard in hand just to remind us that he'd once been on the telly.
Presumably he has a passing fondness for pickled onions, or has at eaten one at some point, but I felt mildly insulted. What next? Johnny Ball's Klean It Kwick kitchen mop collection? Evidence if any be needed that it's time to have a lie down, breathe and rethink the obsession with celebs.
