WHEN Madonna Louise Ciconne first burst onto the pop scene in the early 80s, she made an immediate statement with her crop tops, lace gloves, bleached blonde hair, bushy eyebrows and that much-imitated beauty spot (where did that go?).

An icon was born. Girls all over the country were hooked as they adorned their walls with posters of the Material Girl, sang Like A Virgin without really understanding the words, imitated her dance routines in the playground and tried to sneak out of the house flashing a bit of belly.

As the 1980s turned into the 1990s, the Who's That Girl Madonna with short curly hair, red pout, and even bushier eyebrows got some Blonde Ambition, a high ponytail and a very pointy bra courtesy of Jean-Paul Gaultier. Pinstripe suits became the norm as she asked us all to Vogue.

But soon Hollywood came a-calling and a more demure Madonna embraced old-school glamour as she took on the part of Eva Peron for Evita with sculpted hair, red lips and tea dresses.

Thumbnail image for earthmothermadonna.jpg The Frozen era of the late 90s saw a more Gothic Madonna as she started wearing long black dresses to go with her long black hair. By the time the Millennium came round, Madonna was an Earth Mother to Lourdes as she danced around to Ray of Light in a simple denim and long soft curly hair. The hippy-chic look was much easier to imitate and some say this was when she looked her prettiest. She also showed her support to the young pretenders to her crown by wearing Britney and Kylie t-shirts on stage.

By the middle of the decade, the now Mrs Ritchie wanted us to rediscover disco. With Farrah Fawcett flicks and sparkly lips, her gym-toned body showed us all that she had no intention of slowing down. We did give the leotards a miss though.

Now, as the Queen of Pop hits her half-century, she looks better than ever and her face as been named "the ultimate face" by cosmetic surgeons. She's still churning out great music, teaming up with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Pharell and Timberland on her latest album. Who's to say that in 10 years time she won't still be at the top and Causing A Commotion as she collects her bus pass?
