Madonna Weekend: Dress You Up
![]()
WHEN Madonna Louise Ciconne first burst onto the pop scene in the early 80s, she made an immediate statement with her crop tops, lace gloves, bleached blonde hair, bushy eyebrows and that much-imitated beauty spot (where did that go?).
An icon was born. Girls all over the country were hooked as they adorned their walls with posters of the Material Girl, sang Like A Virgin without really understanding the words, imitated her dance routines in the playground and tried to sneak out of the house flashing a bit of belly.

As the 1980s turned into the 1990s, the Who's That Girl Madonna with short curly hair, red pout, and even bushier eyebrows got some Blonde Ambition, a high ponytail and a very pointy bra courtesy of Jean-Paul Gaultier. Pinstripe suits became the norm as she asked us all to Vogue.

But this look was not to last. Clothes became optional as Sex Madonna emerged and along with the whips and leather she tried to get us all into Erotica. But soon Hollywood came a-calling and a more demure Madonna embraced old-school glamour as she took on the part of Eva Peron for Evita with sculpted hair, red lips and tea dresses.
