Rosalind Nashashibi and Emily Speed nominated for Northern Art Prize
LIVERPOOL-based artists Rosalind Nashashibi and Emily Speed have been nominated for the Northern Art Prize.
Croydon-born Nashashibi studied at the Glasgow School of Art. Previous work include
the films Dahiet a Bareed, District of the Post Office, depicting people going about their daily lives in an area of the West Bank, and Midwest and Midwest Field, which depicts life in Omaha, Nebraska.
Speed lives in Frodsham, Cheshire, but has a studio at Liverpool's The Royal Standard. Her structural installations explore the relationship between architecture and the human body. Recent career highlights include Make Shift, a solo exhibition at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and a commission for The Bluecoat's Topophobia earlier this year.
They were both nominated by Liverpool Biennial director Sally Tallant.
The long-list of 21 artists/artist collaborators will be whittled down to just four by a panel of judges comprising Turner Prize-winning painter Tomma Abts; Margot Heller, director of South London Gallery; Jennifer Higgie, co-editor of contemporary arts magazine Frieze; James Lingwood, co-director of Artangel. Announced in September, the four short-listed artists will exhibit at Leeds Art Gallery from March 28, 2013 to June 16, 2013, where the winner will be announced on May 23, 2013.
Merseyside artists have traditionally done well in the Northern Art Prize. Last year's winner was Leo Fitzmaurice, while Paul Rooney won in 2008/09.
