January 2008 Archives
Liverpool's Culture Company put on a terrific show last night to launch the Echo Arena and the city's 2008 celebrations.
Following on from Friday night's open air triumph in the traditional setting of Lime Street and St George's Hall, this was the turn for the new Liverpool to be put through its paces, in the shape of the stunning 10,000 seat waterfront arena. It did not disappoint.
Well, we are officially off and running, folks. I've just made it back to my desk after watching Ringo Starr and a cast of hundreds perform outside St George's Hall at our European Capital of Culture opening spectacular.
Thousands of people crammed into Lime Street to watch the show, and we were royally entertained by musicians perched on every rooftop, fireworks and death-defying acrobats.
Congratulations to everyone involved with the new production of Willy Russell's musical "Blood Brothers" at the Liverpool Empire.
Penny and I went to the press show on Wednesday night, and we were both mightily impressed. Great performances, an excellent set, and of course the script and music remain as powerful, funny, and moving as ever.
