Nick Clegg outplays Brown and Cameron on the NHS
In recent weeks, David Cameron and Gordon Brown have both fallen into the trap of believing they know best when it comes to the NHS.
While Brown probably has a decent handle on how the NHS is supposed to work, like Cameron, he'll be largely detached from the reality. Both will rely on politicians and departmental staff to tell them what's going on.
For Cameron, saying nothing about the NHS at the moment appears to be the best way: until he silences the NHS critics in his party, any promises he makes about this grand old institution will appear hollow.
So Nick Clegg, largely silent over the summer and eclipsed by Menzies Campbell and Vince Cable, appears to have played a blinder by actually asking those who know the NHS best how it can be run.
Yes, he's asking members of the NHS staff. They probably won't be backward in coming forward with stories of bad management, bad spending and bad policy decisions made even badder.
But at a time when both Labour and Tories are constantly insisting they are feeling our recessionary pain more than the other, how odd that it should take the Lib Dems to realise that actually asking people how to make savings is a very good idea.
