Blog: Now the BNP leader wants praise for improving the party
A rather random throw-away line from Nick Griffin during an interview with Radio 1's Newsbeat today.
He said that he deserves some credit for changing the BNP so it is no longer a menace to people around it.
On one hand, it's good to see him admitting that the BNP was a menace, but on the other hand, a huge shame he refuses to accept it still is.
You only have to look at the comments and stories being posted on the BNP website to realise that many of its supporters are true to the party's traditional beliefs.
Viewing the articles on the site, you have more than just propoganda. You have downright distortion.
If Nick Griffin really felt that the nation needed a party which he claims the BNP is - ie non-racist and with only the best interests of natives at heart - he should have started one from scratch.
Surely, using his logic, trying to reform the BNP means its racist legacy will always drag it down?
But we know the BNP continues to be racist, and its policies and manifesto simply oozes racism.
All Nick Griffin has achieved so far is presenting a view thin mask of respectability which doesn't even stand up to the slightest scrutiny.
If Griffin delivers a party which doesn't play on people's unfounded fears, which doesn't seek to make up rumours to win votes and which agrees to treat all people equally, then he'll deserve praise.
But it'll never happen.
