A Titanic adventure

By Laura Davis on Sep 29, 08 10:00 AM

Titanic-4.jpgWITH a price tag of £23,000 per ticket, it's unlikely many of us will ever get to visit the wreck of Titanic.

The next best thing is to listen to Steve Rigby, honourable secretary of the British Titanic Society, describe his amazing 11-hour dive beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

carling-1.jpgTHE Victorian pavement artist James William Carling (1857-1887) has inspired a new art competition.

The Liverpool-born street urchin created his artworkds on Bold Street before seeking his fortune in America, where his illustrations for Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven came second to those of Gustav Dore, who had already illustrated the Bible, Divine Comedy and Paradise Lost.

beecham1.jpgTHE St Helens-born conductor Thomas Beecham was as well known for his dry wit as for his incredible musical timing, according to the author of a new biography.

John Lucas describes Beecham's many escapades, including the time he threw handfuls of light bulbs down the Adelphi's staircase and hotel guests were woken by the explosion.

THIS scene of passengers disembarking the Mersey Ferry is taken from a series of old films of Liverpool that are being shown at the Woolton Picture House on Thursday September 25.

The footage features life in and around the city from the earliest days of film-making in 1897 to the swinging 60s and includes the Lumiere Brothers' views of Liverpool and the river in 1897 and the results of an earl;y colour Pathe newsreel of local sights.

A vision of love for Sefton Park

By Laura Davis on Sep 19, 08 10:00 AM

DAILY POST photographer Colin Lane took this beautiful picture of the Eros statue which was returned to Sefton Park this week.

It has been in storage for more than a decade undergoing conservation work but has finally been placed back on the top of the Shaftesbury fountain close to the cafe.

HOW do you sum up Liverpool's architectural heritage in just a few hundred pages?

This was the task facing English Heritage's team of writers when they were asked to produce a series of books including Places of Health & Amusement, Liverpool's Parks & Gardens, Liverpool's Place's of Worship and Storehouses of Empire.

Memories of Ellis's Store

By Laura Davis on Sep 16, 08 12:39 PM

NED BURKE, of West Derby, has written in with his memories sparked by seeing the Daily Post's Looking Back photo of Ellis's Store at the corner of Tenderden Street (below).

He recalls: "Tenderden Street was in St Anthony's parish, In 1933, the parishoners celebrated the one hundredth anniversay of the church building. Like Tenderden Street, many streets in the area were festooned with banners and bunting.

IT'S 10 years since English Heritage widened its Blue Plaques scheme to cities outside London, putting up 15 in Merseyside.

To mark the anniversary I've created a Google Map of their locations which you can see below. Click on the drawing pins for more details about each one, or click here for a bigger version that you can print off and use for directions.

I AM guilty of Sky+ing the new Hovis advert and watching it back over and over to try and recognise the Liverpool streets it was filmed on.

While it's not strictly local history, the 122-second ad must have brought back memories to those who saw it for the first time during Coronation Street last night - seeing your husband return from war, the girl you fancied in the knee length boots in the Cavern, the Miners' Strike, kicking a football through the streets as a kid...
