Memories of Ellis's Store
NED BURKE, of West Derby, has written in with his memories sparked by seeing the Daily Post's Looking Back photo of Ellis's Store at the corner of Tenderden Street (below).
He recalls: "Tenderden Street was in St Anthony's parish, In 1933, the parishoners celebrated the one hundredth anniversay of the church building. Like Tenderden Street, many streets in the area were festooned with banners and bunting.
"Parishioners decorated the front of their homes. From Limekiln Lane across Scotland Road to Great Homer Street, for days a carnival atmosphere prevailed throughout the disrict.
"Reverend Father Twomey was the parish priest. The headteacher in the senior boys school was Mr Bill Murray. As a boy he attended St Sylvester's School with my Dad and the great-grandfather of the mother of the Secretary of State for Culture, Arts and Sports, Andy Burnham."
