Jodrell Bank marks 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 Moon landings
TO CELEBRATE the 40th anniversary of the Moon landings, Jodrell Bank in Cheshire is holding a weekend of events.
On Saturday July 18, visiting archaeologists and astronomers will be giving talks throughout the day about astronomy through the ages. Subjects include astronomy and the Egyptian pyramids, new discoveries at Stonehenge and skywatching with the Aztecs.

Visitors will also be able to take a walk with GPS satellite navigation to draw their own Nazca lines and discover the night sky of ancient Egypt in the inflatable planetarium.

On Sunday July 19, there will be presentations from Sir Bernard Lovell, Prof
Colin Pillinger, most famous for his work on Beagle 2, and Andrew Smith, author of Moondust: In Search of the Men who fell to Earth.

There will also be special messages from Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Prof Stephen Hawking.

Scientists will be sending voice messages as radio transmissions to the Moon, bouncing them off its surface and catching their returning echoes with the Lovell Telescope - sounds pretty amazing!

Hello, I was one of the outside broadcast technicians ( 1 of 3 ) involved in the simultaneous feed to the world of the Apollo 11 moon landing when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first set foot upon the Lunar surface on July 20th 1969.
We were taking a dedicated feed from the Jodrell
Bank radio telescope to our outside broadcast
vehicle which was run by British Lion Television based at Shepperton Film studios. If you would like any further information, let me know.
Some time later after the event, the astronauts came to Shepperton Studios to thank us personally.
Regards, Bob Olsen MSc.
