September 2009 Archives
THE Walker has just launched an exhibition of the work of op artist Bridget Riley. She's a big fan of the city as she won the prestigious John Moores Prize here in the 60s.
What many people don't know is that she created an installation for the Royal Liverpool Hospital back in the 80s.
Here's what my predecessor, Phil Key, had to say about it at the time...
AFTER putting this blog post on here, I received a message via the Pool of Life Twitter account with details of this forum all about the mass grave discovered in Old Swan.
Hopefully it will help Lydia with her research and make pretty intriguing reading for the rest of us.
Thanks to Kev at Yo! Liverpool for the link.

MORE than 18,000 items of football memorabilia are being unveiled to the public as part of the world's most comprehensive football archive.
The oldest Manchester United programme, Alan Ball's famous white boots and 1966 World Cup memorabilia form part of the collection providing a detailed football archive with items pre-dating the formation of the Football League in 1888.
FINAL year History student Lydia Chadwick is researching her dissertation and is hoping to tap into the minds and memories of Pool of Life readers.
She's looking for information on the mass grave that was discovered in Old Swan in 1973, on the building site of St Oswald's Junior School.
Can anyone help her? Email massgraveoldswan@googlemail.com if so but please also share what you know in the comments section below.
I'VE just been sent this press release about an event taking place tonight so am printing it in full to get it out there as quickly as possible...
A new lease of life for a special building, the Lyceum, in Port Sunlight Village which has undergone a part major internal refurbishment, will be celebrated with an evening lecture on Thursday 17th September at 7pm, doors open 6pm.
The Lyceum building was built originally as the village school and Church, Lionel Bolland Chief Executive of the Port Sunlight Village Trust said, "It is always difficult to find a sustainable future of buildings for a specific purpose. We are pleased to see the Lyceum fully occupied with the Social Club making a real effort to establish itself in one area of the building".

IT TURNS out that 16th century first editions are like buses - you wait years for one to come along and then two appear at once.

Just as St Francis Xavier's Church in Liverpool was preparing to display important artefacts related to Henry VIII's reign - including a 1521 first edition of Henry's Defence of the Seven Sacraments - when they another copy came to light.
The first copy, along with Thomas Moore's gold cross and John Fisher's signet ring, is on loan from Stonyhurst College for display during English Heritage's Heritage Open Days scheme this week.
