KNOWSLEY Council is looking for history enthusiasts to sign up to a free volunteer training course to become an ambassador in heritage.

Beginning in the new year, the course involves working with blue badge guides, storytellers and other heritage professionals.

Those who enrol will also benefit from all expenses paid visits to local museums as they train to act as ambassadors to promote the borough's rich heritage.

slemen.jpgTOM SLEMEN'S best-selling Haunted Liverpool books will come to life in a series of dramatic readings later this month.

The spooky tales, adapted for stage by Jen Hayes, will be retold through readings and theatrical performance at St George's Hall's Small Concert Room.

The first readings of Tales from Haunted Liverpool will be performed by Royal Court stalwart Eithne Browne, MC at Liverpool Capital of Culture opening ceremony Brian Dodd and Stephen Fletcher, who recently starred as Hamlet in the same location.

Producer Bill Elms says: "Tom Slemen's books are incredibly popular in Liverpool and lovers of these books can now sit back and hear these spine chilling stories in a live interactive way and in a very unique setting."

Slemen has written nine Haunted Liverpool books of spine tingling tales of the city's past and present. Tales from Haunted Liverpool takes place on November 25. Tickets £10 - £12.50, 0151 709 4988.

THE Walker has just launched an exhibition of the work of op artist Bridget Riley. She's a big fan of the city as she won the prestigious John Moores Prize here in the 60s.

Held every October, it aims to promote as well as celebrate black history, culture and heritage.

Lewis Hamilton, Ms Dynamite and John Conteh all star in this exhibition of inspirational photographs by John Ferguson. The exhibition celebrates the contribution black people have made to British culture over the last few decades and includes teachers, farmers and firefighters alongside household names.

MORE than 18,000 items of football memorabilia are being unveiled to the public as part of the world's most comprehensive football archive.

The oldest Manchester United programme, Alan Ball's famous white boots and 1966 World Cup memorabilia form part of the collection providing a detailed football archive with items pre-dating the formation of the Football League in 1888.

A new lease of life for a special building, the Lyceum, in Port Sunlight Village which has undergone a part major internal refurbishment, will be celebrated with an evening lecture on Thursday 17th September at 7pm, doors open 6pm.

The Lyceum building was built originally as the village school and Church, Lionel Bolland Chief Executive of the Port Sunlight Village Trust said, "It is always difficult to find a sustainable future of buildings for a specific purpose. We are pleased to see the Lyceum fully occupied with the Social Club making a real effort to establish itself in one area of the building".

IT TURNS out that 16th century first editions are like buses - you wait years for one to come along and then two appear at once.



Just as St Francis Xavier's Church in Liverpool was preparing to display important artefacts related to Henry VIII's reign - including a 1521 first edition of Henry's Defence of the Seven Sacraments - when they another copy came to light.

The first copy, along with Thomas Moore's gold cross and John Fisher's signet ring, is on loan from Stonyhurst College for display during English Heritage's Heritage Open Days scheme this week.

SECOND World War evacuees are needed to help bring a historical production alive to local school children.

The Floral Pavilion is staging two Horrible Histories shows, based on the children's books and TV series, covering the "Frightful First World War" and "Woeful Second World War".

A TWO day exhibition commemorating the 70th anniversary of the start of World War Two opens at Liverpool Town Hall for two days only this week.

It was the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, which led Britain to go to war two days later, and the unique display focuses on the experience of Liverpool and the Polish city of Gdansk.

The exhibition, which is open on Tuesday September 1 and Wednesday September 2, includes photographs of wartime damage of both cities, as well as period books, games and other household items.

ARE you in the habit of polishing your best china and putting out your finest crockery for visitors? Imagine the dusters you'd get through if you had hundreds of collectables to look after, and your visitors numbered many thousands per year.

She will be sharing her experiences of taking care of the ceramics, paintings, silverware, furniture, books and other items unique to the Cheshire stately home's collection at a lunchtime lecture today.
