pope3.jpgAS WE wait to learn whether Pope Benedict XVI will visit Liverpool during his British tour next year it seems a good time to reflect on the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1982.

I was four at the time and can remember my mum telling me the Pope was coming to the end of our road. We lived on Woodlands Road, in Aigburth, at the time so I can only assume that he travelled along Aigburth Road on his journey between Speke and the cathedrals. Can anyone confirm this or set me straight?

pope1.jpgMy memories of the experience are very vague, but I know my cousins were there and that my sister was a toddler in a buggy at the time. I also remember eating three Mr Men lolly ices because it was a long wait and I think each adult bought them for us without realising we'd already had one. We were only ever allowed Lemonade Sparkles or Mini Milks so this was a special treat, which is why I think it stuck in my mind.

What are your memories of the Pope's visit?

Memories of Colomendy

By Laura Davis on Jul 16, 09 08:15 AM

AFTER I wrote this post on Colomendy, some Pool of Life readers wrote in to share their own memories of the North Wales children's camp.

Feel free to add yours to the comments section below or email them to me at laura.davis@liverpool.com and I'll add them to the blog.

Jenny writes: I LOVED Colomendy. The tales of 'Peg Leg' still haunt me to this day...

Mark says: Colomendy? Brilliant. But did you mention the ghost of the Italian soldier! There was always a ghost story or two and the soldier in the woods was ours.

Does anyone else remember any Colomendy ghosts?

ARE you one of the thousands of Liverpool schoolchildren who visited Colomendy?

If so you'll probably enjoy this feature by the Daily Post's Bill Leece, looking back at the adventure centre's history and its use as a camp for evacuees.

HAS anyone out there got any memories or tape-recordings of the Crabtrees, one of the most popular folk groups on Merseyside during the 1960s?
If so please contact Derek Marsden who founded the group with the brother and sister, Hal and Joy Crabtree from Wallasey.

Sadly, Hal died a few years ago and Joy now lives in Southend.
But Derek, a retired teacher, and Joy are compiling a CD of Crabtrees' songs, which will be accompanied by a colourful booklet.

A tale of two Christmasses

A SEASONAL blog post for you - researchers at Liverpool University have uncovered details of a Christmas party held for its servants at the Victoria Building in 1895.

Victoriabuild1.jpg

It took place on December 27, with food and music, and was given by the Vice-Principal, Professor MacCunn.

RESEARCHERS working on a major exhibition set to open at a Wirral gallery next month are appealing for information about a worker who was featured in the Daily Post 40 years ago.

Carole Hawkins was an embroiderer at Birkenhead's Arthur H Lee tapestry works back in the 1960s, and she was photographed in a feature about the works.

evacuees-1.jpgAS PROMISED, here is a link to the interview I did with two brothers who were evacuated to North Wales during World War II.

Listening to their memories was a moving experience as they are very nostalgic about their time in the Ruthin area and most of the people they met there are now dead.

Red funnel provides a clue

AFTER this photo was printed in the Daily Post's Looking Back feature, eagle-eyed Norman Brown from Wallasey spotted a mistake in the caption.

The picture did not show, as we had published, "Woodchurch" ferry but either Egrement or Leasowe.

Memories of Ellis's Store

By Laura Davis on Sep 16, 08 12:39 PM

NED BURKE, of West Derby, has written in with his memories sparked by seeing the Daily Post's Looking Back photo of Ellis's Store at the corner of Tenderden Street (below).

Ellis Store.jpg

He recalls: "Tenderden Street was in St Anthony's parish, In 1933, the parishoners celebrated the one hundredth anniversay of the church building. Like Tenderden Street, many streets in the area were festooned with banners and bunting.

I AM guilty of Sky+ing the new Hovis advert and watching it back over and over to try and recognise the Liverpool streets it was filmed on.

While it's not strictly local history, the 122-second ad must have brought back memories to those who saw it for the first time during Coronation Street last night - seeing your husband return from war, the girl you fancied in the knee length boots in the Cavern, the Miners' Strike, kicking a football through the streets as a kid...
