IT'S 50 years today since Bill Shankly was appointed as Liverpool FC manager. BBC Liverpool has uncovered a video of him telling sculptor Arthur Dooley about the passion of LFC fans' passion. It's really worth a watch.

Shankly was first interviewed the job eight years earlier in 1951. In a later interview he recalled the experience, as reported on Shankly.com:

"In 1951, when I was the manager of Carlisle United, I got a telephone call from Liverpool and was asked if I'd like to be interviewed for the manager's job. George Kay had just resigned. I stayed in Southport on the Sunday night and went to meet the Liverpool board the next day.

A SOUTH African historian is touring Merseyside to explain why a stand at Liverpool FC's Anfield ground was named after a bloody Boer War battle.

The Battle of Spion Kop saw the deaths of 311 soldiers over two days, 243 of them British, and was perhaps the most brutal battle of the war.

Historian Raymond Herod, who is currently travelling around Britain lecturing about South African history, with wife Lynette, said: "At the time of the Anglo-Boer war, most big football stadiums being built were near completion.

THREE Liverpool FC legends will be taking to the stage to mark the 50th anniversary of Bill Shankly's arrival at the Kop. Ian St John, Ron Yeats and Chris Lawler will all take part in two special summer productions of The Bill Shankly Story, which has played to packed houses at home and abroad since its 2006 premiere.

Producer and scriptwriter John Keith speaks Shankly's words while actor Steve Hazlehurst narrates the story, from the Scot's birth in the Ayrshire pit village of Glenbuck, through his glory years at Anfield to his untimely death in 1981.

His three former players recall revealing personal memories and anecdotes about football's most charismatic manager.

buchan1.jpgCHARLES BUCHAN'S Football Monthly magazine brought the excitement of the beautiful game into the homes of little boys even if they didn't own a television or couldn't afford tickets to the match.

A new compilation of his articles and photos, featuring Liverpool FC between 1951 and 1973, would make a lovely Christmas present for those little boys now they have grown up.
